Towards ORIQ
Towards an Observatory on Racial Inequalities in Quebec
24 March 2021; 11 AM-12:30 PM

Program
Systemic racism exists and manifests itself in different areas of the country’s institutional, social and economic life, especially in the employment sector.
In Quebec, even more than in the rest of Canada, BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Colour) face many barriers to accessing decent work, including discrimination in hiring and non-recognition of experience and credentials. Youth are particularly affected, as this has implications for their personal, academic, family and professional lives, as well as their subjective well-being.
The lack of data makes it more difficult to implement concrete solutions to counter the inequalities and discrimination that affect people of colour. The Observatory of Racial Inequalities in Quebec aims to respond to the information needs of public authorities, community organizations, stakeholders and the general public in order to advance the fight against systemic racism.
Alternatives presents this unique and inclusive initiative in Quebec. The creation of the Quebec Observatory on Racial Inequality is one of 85 projects funded by Canadian Heritage in 2020, as part of its new action program to fight racism. This observatory will shed new light on issues of systemic and structural racism and bring some conclusions and recommendations to the forefront of public debate. Several issues are addressed, starting with racial inequalities in the employment sector.
